The old cowl allows leaves and large junk to fall in the holes and down into the heatorbox and vent....
with a few screws and removing the washer hose the old cowl was off.

you can see all the crap that falls thru the slots. this is just the top side too.

I not sure what happened but the drivers side had a gap, but it works for a trail truck/driver truck...
