The 1989 BMW 5 Series introduced the E34 generation to the United States, replacing the E28 after seven model years. Two sedans opened the range: the 525i with a 2.5-liter M20 six rated at 168 horsepower and the 535i with a 3.4-liter M30 six rated at 208 horsepower. The E34 body rode on a 108.7-inch wheelbase, roughly five inches longer than the E28's, and both models offered a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic.
