The 1970 Dodge Challenger launched the first-generation E-body, a rear-wheel-drive platform shared with the Plymouth Barracuda. It was offered as a 2-door hardtop and a convertible in base, R/T, and the racing-homologation T/A configurations. Engine choices spanned the 225 cubic inch (3.7L) slant-six, the 318, 340, 383, and 440 V8s, and the 426 cubic inch (7.0L) Hemi rated at 425 hp gross, while the 1970-only T/A used a 340 with three two-barrel carburetors (290 hp gross). Transmissions were a 3-speed manual, a 4-speed manual, and the TorqueFlite 3-speed automatic.
