The 1997 Ford Escort was substantially rebodied on the carryover Mazda-derived chassis, with new exterior and interior design. Ford trimmed the line to a sedan and wagon, retiring the three-door and five-door hatchbacks and dropping the GT. A new 2.0L SPI four rated 110 hp (net) replaced the 1.9L CVH.
