The 1991 Ford Explorer launched the first-generation midsize SUV, replacing the two-door Bronco II. It used the UN46 platform, a body-on-frame chassis derived from the Ford Ranger pickup, and added a four-door body alongside the two-door. The 1991 Explorer was powered by the 4.0-liter overhead-valve V6 rated at 155 horsepower and 220 lb-ft of torque, with a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic. Trim levels were XL, XLT, the two-door Sport, and the upscale Eddie Bauer.
