The 2003 Ford Explorer continued the third-generation design with the single-overhead-cam 4.0-liter V6 and the 4.6-liter V8, the independent rear suspension, and the available third-row seat. The 2003 model year was the final year for the two-door Explorer Sport, which carried over on the older second-generation body. The four-door Explorer remained body-on-frame across XLS, XLT, Eddie Bauer, and Limited trims.
