The 2005 Ford Explorer was the final model year of the third generation before the 2006 redesign. It continued the single-overhead-cam 4.0-liter V6 and the 4.6-liter V8, the independent rear suspension, and the available third-row seat. The 2005 Explorer remained a body-on-frame midsize SUV with rear-wheel drive standard and available ControlTrac four-wheel drive, across XLS, XLT, Eddie Bauer, and Limited trims.
