The 2017 Ford Explorer continued the facelifted fifth-generation design with the 3.5-liter naturally aspirated V6, the 2.3-liter EcoBoost four, and the twin-turbo 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 in the Sport and Platinum. The 2017 Explorer remained a three-row unibody crossover on the front-drive-based D4 platform, with front-wheel drive standard and all-wheel drive optional.
