The 1963 Ford Galaxie gained a midyear Sports Hardtop, the semi-fastback roofline added partway through the model year to cut drag on NASCAR superspeedways, and Galaxies famously swept the first five finishing positions at that year's Daytona 500. Midyear also brought the 427 cubic inch FE V8 in place of the 406, rated at 410 horsepower gross with a single four-barrel or 425 horsepower gross with dual quads. The Galaxie 500 and bucket-seat Galaxie 500/XL topped a full-size lineup that started with the plain-trim Ford 300.
