The 1972 Ford Galaxie 500 was a full-size model on the body Ford redesigned for 1971, making 1972 a carryover year, positioned below the LTD in the big-car range. It was among the final Galaxie 500 model years before Ford dropped the Galaxie name from its US lineup after 1974. For 1972, engines carried the new SAE net power ratings and lower compression for regular-grade fuel, spanning a 351 cu in V8, a 400 cu in V8 (about 172 net hp), and a 429 cu in V8 (about 205 net hp). Body styles included the four-door sedan and hardtop, a formal two-door hardtop, and the two-door SportsRoof fastback, with the three-speed Cruise-O-Matic automatic the common transmission.
