The 1972 Ford Ranchero moved onto Ford's redesigned, larger Gran Torino platform on a 118-inch wheelbase, making it the biggest Ranchero since the full-size era. The 1972 model year also marked the industry switch to SAE net horsepower, so ratings dropped relative to earlier gross figures. The base engine was the 250 inline-six, with V8s including the 302, 351, 400, and the big-block 429.
