The 1956 Ford Thunderbird was the second year of the two-seat first generation, adding an external Continental-kit spare tire on the rear bumper to reclaim trunk space and an optional round porthole window in the removable hardtop. The 292 cubic inch Y-block V8 rose to 202 gross horsepower, and a new optional 312 cubic inch Y-block V8 delivered 215 gross horsepower with manual transmission or 225 gross horsepower with the Ford-O-Matic automatic. The electrical system switched from 6-volt to 12-volt for 1956, and cowl vents were added ahead of the windshield.
