The 1977 Ford Thunderbird began the downsized seventh generation, moving to the mid-size Torino and LTD II chassis at a much lower price, which drove sales past 300,000 units for the year. It was a two-door hardtop coupe with wraparound basket-handle B-pillar styling and opera windows. The standard 302 cubic inch (5.0L) Windsor V8 produced 130 SAE net horsepower, with optional 351 cubic inch (5.8L, 135 hp) and 400 cubic inch (6.6L, 173 hp) V8s.
