The 1988 Mazda MX-6 brought the nameplate to the United States as a front-wheel-drive sport coupe on the GD platform shared with the 626 sedan. It was the first vehicle assembled at Mazda's Flat Rock, Michigan plant, which started production in September 1987. DX and LX trims used the F2 2.2-liter four rated at 110 horsepower, while the GT added a turbocharger and intercooler for 145 horsepower.
