The factory paint is thick & tough, but it's not impervious, and scratches lead to HUGE scale farms underneath the brittle paint. In the salt belt, the brackets usually aren't salvageable, but this one still just has (heavy) surface rust. I'll cup-brush it off, and then undercoat it before bolting it back on.
