After!

I used candy apple red (transparent) paint on the backside with the shiny chrome behind to achieve the same pearlescent look as the stock red emblem.

It didn't come out anywhere perfect, but it's still MUCH better looking than before.

I did not know the chrome of the Lincoln star was molded and raised into the metal housing BEHIND the lens, which made painting a PITA as I had to mask out the little tiny grooves.
The backside also has flutes grooved in which interlock with flutes i nthe housing behind.

I wont be trying this again, and now that I see how the emblem is constructed - replacement of the whole rear license surround is a better option.
