The Mercury Grand Marquis of 1992-1997 is the aerodynamically restyled generation of Ford's rear-wheel-drive Panther platform, sold as a four-door pillared sedan in GS and LS trim. For 1992 it replaced the previous 5.0 liter (302 cubic inch) pushrod V8 with the 4.6 liter (281 cubic inch) modular SOHC V8 backed by a four-speed automatic overdrive transmission. It shared its chassis and drivetrain with the concurrently restyled Ford Crown Victoria, and the station wagon body (Colony Park) was dropped, leaving the sedan as the only body style.

Platform

The 1992-1997 Mercury Grand Marquis uses Ford's body-on-frame, rear-wheel-drive Panther platform, carried over from the earlier boxy Grand Marquis but reskinned for 1992 with rounded aerodynamic bodywork. It retained a live rear axle with coil springs and a live-axle Panther chassis rather than adopting a unibody. It is the Mercury counterpart to the 1992-1997 Ford Crown Victoria.

Engine lineup

Every 1992-1997 Grand Marquis uses the 4.6 liter (281 cubic inch) SOHC modular V8 with two valves per cylinder and sequential electronic fuel injection. This replaced the 5.0 liter (302 cubic inch) Windsor pushrod V8 used through 1991.

  • Single exhaust: rated at 190 net horsepower.
  • Dual exhaust option: rated at approximately 210 net horsepower.

The dual-exhaust package was offered as an option and produces the higher output figure; the single-exhaust rating of 190 horsepower is the standard configuration across the span.

Transmission

The 4.6 V8 drives through a four-speed automatic overdrive transmission. Early 1992 cars used the AOD-E (electronically controlled), and the revised 4R70W four-speed automatic was adopted during this generation. All are four-speed automatics driving the rear wheels.

Body styles

The 1992-1997 Grand Marquis was built only as a four-door pillared (framed-window) sedan. The Colony Park station wagon that had been part of the prior Grand Marquis range was discontinued and did not return for the aero generation.
