The 1989 Mercury Cougar was redesigned on the new rear-drive MN12 platform shared with the Ford Thunderbird, bringing a longer 113-inch wheelbase and four-wheel independent suspension. The XR7 carried a supercharged 3.8L V6 rated at 210 horsepower, while the LS used a naturally aspirated 3.8L V6.
