The 1991 Mercury Cougar brought V8 power to the MN12 coupe, with the 5.0L offered in the LS and replacing the supercharged 3.8L V6 in the XR7, whose blown engine departed after 1990. The naturally aspirated 3.8L V6 remained the standard engine.
