The 1997 Mercury Cougar was the final year for the rear-drive MN12 coupe and marked the nameplate's 30th anniversary with a special edition package. Production ended alongside the Ford Thunderbird, and the Cougar name sat out 1998 before returning on a front-drive platform for 1999.
