1992-1995 Mercury SableSecond-Gen Sable

1992–1995 19 on the wall

The 1992-1995 Mercury Sable is the second generation of Mercury's front-drive mid-size sedan and wagon, a heavy restyle of the 1986-1991 original that changed every body panel on the sedan except the doors. It kept the Sable's signature front lightbar between the headlights, ran the 3.0 liter Vulcan V6 standard with the 3.8 liter Essex V6 optional, and came in GS and LS trims, joined by a low-volume LTS sedan for 1995. It shared its DN5 platform and running gear with the second-generation Ford Taurus.

Other Mercury Sable generations

Platform and body

The 1992-1995 Mercury Sable rode on the same front-drive unibody platform as the second-generation Ford Taurus, carried over from the 1986 original with a 106 inch wheelbase. The 1992 restyle was deeper than it looks in photos: on the sedan, every exterior panel except the doors was new, with rounder fascias front and rear and a fully redone dashboard. The wagon carried over its old structure from the B-pillar back. The full-width front lightbar, the low-wattage lamp panel between the headlights that had set the Sable apart from the Taurus since 1986, survived the restyle in a slimmer, pinched form.

Engines

  • 3.0 liter Vulcan V6: standard on every 1992-1995 Sable. Pushrod iron-block V6 rated at 140 horsepower. A simple, long-lived engine; most surviving cars have this one.
  • 3.8 liter Essex V6: optional across the line. Also rated at 140 horsepower but with 215 lb-ft of torque, noticeably stronger off the line and the better match for a loaded wagon. Its known weak point is the head gaskets, a common failure on 1990s Essex engines that any buyer should check for.

Drivetrain and transmissions

All 1992-1995 Sables are front-wheel drive with a 4-speed automatic transaxle; no manual was offered. Early cars use the electronically controlled AXOD-E, which Ford renamed AX4S during the run with lubrication and durability upgrades. Some 1994-1995 Vulcan cars received the stronger AX4N transaxle. These transaxles are the generation's other weak spot, and regular fluid service matters more than anything else for their survival.

Year-by-year changes

  • 1992: The restyled body and interior arrive. A driver airbag is standard and a passenger airbag becomes optional.
  • 1993: The passenger airbag becomes standard, giving the Sable dual airbags. A redesigned steering wheel returns the horn button to the center, and the 3.0 liter switches to a single accessory drive belt in place of the separate alternator belt.
  • 1994: Detail running changes; some 3.0 liter cars begin receiving the stronger AX4N transaxle.
  • 1995: Final year of this body. The LTS sedan joins the line with leather bucket seats, alloy wheels, and body cladding.

Trims and variants

The 1992-1995 Sable came as a 4-door sedan or 4-door wagon in base GS and uplevel LS trim, the LS adding upgraded seats, trim, and equipment. The 1995-only LTS, short for Limited Touring Sedan, was a sportier sedan package with leather buckets and unique wheels, available with either engine. Mercury never offered a Sable counterpart to the Taurus SHO in this generation. For 1996 the Sable was replaced by the all-new, oval-styled third-generation car.

Asked all the time

What engines came in the 1992-1995 Mercury Sable?

Every 1992-1995 Mercury Sable came standard with the 3.0 liter Vulcan V6, rated at 140 horsepower. The 3.8 liter Essex V6 was optional on all trims; it carried the same 140 horsepower rating but made 215 lb-ft of torque, so it pulls harder in normal driving.

Did the 1992-1995 Mercury Sable keep the front lightbar?

Yes. The 1992 restyle kept the Sable's signature full-width lightbar between the headlights, though it was slimmed down compared to the 1986-1991 car. The lightbar did not disappear until the third-generation Sable arrived for 1996.

When did the Mercury Sable get dual airbags?

The 1992 Mercury Sable had a standard driver airbag with a passenger airbag optional. For 1993 the passenger airbag became standard, so all 1993-1995 Sables have dual front airbags.

What transmission is in a 1992-1995 Mercury Sable, and is it reliable?

All 1992-1995 Sables use a 4-speed automatic transaxle: the AXOD-E early on, renamed AX4S with internal upgrades, plus the stronger AX4N in some 1994-1995 3.0 liter cars. These transaxles are the generation's most common failure point, and consistent fluid changes are the best defense.

Is the 3.8 liter Essex V6 in the 1992-1995 Sable a head gasket risk?

Yes. The 3.8 liter Essex V6 offered in the 1992-1995 Mercury Sable is known for head gasket failures in this era. Check for coolant loss, overheating history, and oil-coolant mixing before buying, or confirm the gaskets have already been replaced.

What is the LTS trim on the 1995 Mercury Sable?

The LTS, short for Limited Touring Sedan, was a one-year trim added to the 1995 Mercury Sable sedan. It came with leather bucket seats, alloy wheels in the style of the Taurus LX, body cladding, and extra leather-wrapped interior trim, with either the 3.0 liter Vulcan or the optional 3.8 liter Essex V6.
