1996-1999 Mercury SableThird-Gen Sable (Oval Era)

1996–1999 42 on the wall 1 document ↓

The third-generation Mercury Sable, sold for the 1996-1999 model years, was Mercury's version of the oval-era Ford Taurus redesign, built on the same front-drive DN101 platform with its own front and rear styling. Two 3.0 liter V6 engines were offered: the pushrod Vulcan rated at 145 horsepower and the DOHC 24-valve Duratec rated at 200 horsepower. The line ran from a base G sedan (1996-1997) through the volume GS and the better-equipped LS, with GS and LS also sold as wagons. A 1998 refresh brought new headlights and a grille with a centered Mercury emblem before the fourth-generation car replaced this design for 2000.

Other Mercury Sable generations

Platform and body

The 1996-1999 Mercury Sable shares the DN101 front-wheel-drive platform with the third-generation Ford Taurus, an extensive reworking of the earlier structure that stretched the wheelbase to 108.5 inches. The body was new, styled around the oval theme Ford applied across the car, though the Sable's execution was more conservative than the Taurus, with its own hood, fenders, front fascia, and rear treatment. Body styles were a four-door sedan and a wagon in every year of the run. Unlike the Taurus, the Sable sedan used a conventional rectangular rear window rather than the Taurus's oval backlight, and the wagon carried Sable-specific front styling and trim on the shared wagon body.

Engines

  • 3.0L Vulcan V6 (OHV, 12-valve): the base engine across 1996-1999, rated at 145 horsepower and 170 lb-ft of torque. A pushrod iron-block design dating to 1986, valued for simplicity and cheap parts rather than output.
  • 3.0L Duratec 30 V6 (DOHC, 24-valve): the upgrade engine, rated at 200 horsepower and 200 lb-ft of torque. Aluminum block and heads, new for 1996 as an enlarged version of the V6 used in the Mercury Mystique. It came standard on the LS and optional on the GS through 1998; for 1999 the Vulcan became standard on every Sable and the Duratec moved to the option sheet on upper trims.

Both engines displace 3.0 liters, so the badge on the deck tells you nothing. The quick check under the hood: the Vulcan has a single cam-in-block layout with a simple upper intake, while the Duratec's wide twin-cam heads fill the engine bay. Both run coil packs; neither engine used a distributor in this generation.

Drivetrain and transmissions

Every 1996-1999 Mercury Sable is front-wheel drive. All were automatics; no manual was offered. Vulcan cars generally used the AX4S four-speed automatic, though some left the factory with the AX4N, while every Duratec car used the stronger AX4N, which handles the DOHC engine's torque better. Both are four-speed transaxles with overdrive. The AX4N is the more durable of the two, and a common upgrade path when an AX4S fails is a swap to the AX4N, since the units are dimensionally similar.

Year-by-year changes

  • 1996: full redesign launches the third-generation Sable with the Vulcan and the new Duratec V6. Trims are the base G sedan, GS, and LS, with GS and LS offered as sedan or wagon.
  • 1997: largely carryover; front-door map pockets became standard.
  • 1998: mid-cycle refresh with new headlights and a grille carrying a centered Mercury emblem, plus a revised axle ratio for better acceleration. The base G sedan was dropped.
  • 1999: final year of the generation. The Vulcan became the standard engine across the line with the Duratec optional, alongside price cuts and suspension revisions ahead of the redesigned 2000 Sable.

Trims and variants

The 1996-1997 line started with the G, a low-price sedan sold only with the Vulcan and minimal equipment. Above it, the GS and the better-equipped LS ran the full 1996-1999 span, each in sedan and wagon form. The LS added upgraded interior trim, alloy wheels, and the Duratec engine plus options such as leather seating and a bench or bucket front-seat choice. The wagon offered an optional two-place rear-facing third seat for eight-passenger capacity, a carryover feature from earlier Sable and Taurus wagons. There was no Sable equivalent of the Taurus SHO; the 200 horsepower Duratec LS was the top of the line.

Asked all the time

What engines came in the 1996-1999 Mercury Sable?

The 1996-1999 Mercury Sable offered two 3.0 liter V6s: the base Vulcan, a pushrod 12-valve engine rated at 145 horsepower, and the Duratec 30, a DOHC 24-valve aluminum engine rated at 200 horsepower and 200 lb-ft. Both displace 3.0 liters, so you have to look under the hood, not at the badge, to tell them apart.

Is the third-generation Mercury Sable the same car as the Ford Taurus?

Mechanically, yes. The 1996-1999 Mercury Sable shares the DN101 platform, engines, and transmissions with the 1996-1999 Ford Taurus. The Sable has its own front and rear sheetmetal and a more conservative take on the oval styling, including a conventional rectangular rear window on the sedan instead of the Taurus's oval backlight.

What transmission does the 1996-1999 Mercury Sable use?

All 1996-1999 Sables are front-wheel-drive automatics. Vulcan-engined cars generally use the AX4S four-speed transaxle, though some got the AX4N from the factory, and every Duratec car uses the stronger AX4N four-speed. The AX4N is the more durable unit and a common replacement when an AX4S gives out.

What changed in the 1998 Mercury Sable facelift?

For 1998 the Mercury Sable received a mid-cycle refresh with new headlights and a grille carrying a centered Mercury emblem, plus a revised axle ratio for better acceleration. The base G sedan was dropped that year, leaving GS and LS, and the engines and transmissions carried over.

Did the 1996-1999 Mercury Sable come as a wagon?

Yes. The Mercury Sable was sold as a wagon in both GS and LS trim for all of 1996-1999, with an optional two-place rear-facing third seat that raised capacity to eight. The wagon shares its body structure with the Taurus wagon but wears Sable-specific front styling and trim.

Which is the better engine in a 1996-1999 Sable, the Vulcan or the Duratec?

It depends on what you want from the car. The 145 horsepower Vulcan in the 1996-1999 Sable is slower but simple and cheap to keep running. The 200 horsepower Duratec is much stronger and pairs with the tougher AX4N transaxle, but repairs cost more and the packed engine bay makes some jobs, like rear-bank plugs, harder.
