Mercury Topaz
1989 Mercury Topaz Specs & Photos
The 1989 Mercury Topaz was the Mercury-badged twin of the Ford Tempo, a front-wheel-drive compact built on Ford's Tempo/Topaz platform. It belonged to the second generation (1988-1994), which had been restyled with more rounded, aerodynamic bodywork for 1988, and 1989 was a carryover year within that redesign. Power came from the 2.3L HSC pushrod inline-four rated at 98 hp (net), with a 100 hp high-output (HSO) version in the sportier LTS and XR5 trims, driving through a five-speed manual or three-speed automatic. The 1989 Topaz was offered as a 2-door and 4-door sedan and could be ordered with the on-demand all-wheel-drive system Ford sold on these cars from 1987 to 1991.
