The 1997 Pontiac Grand Am is a carryover year within the fourth-generation N-body line (1992-1998), sold as a two-door coupe and four-door sedan in SE and GT trim. It carried the 2.4L LD9 Twin Cam DOHC inline-four (150 hp net) as standard equipment and the 3.1L 60-degree V6 (155 hp net) as the option, with a five-speed manual offered on the four-cylinder and a four-speed automatic available with either engine. Changes for 1997 were minor relative to 1996. The generation is identifiable by its heavy ribbed lower body cladding.
