The 1986 Toyota Hilux switched its four-wheel-drive models to Hi-Trac independent front suspension with torsion bars, ending the solid-axle era on US trucks. A turbocharged 22R-TE rated 135 horsepower joined the 2.4-liter lineup the same year. American buyers knew the truck as the Toyota Pickup; the Hilux badge continued in overseas markets.
