The story
I'm mounting the 54 F100 body on a newer 4x4 chassis.
My plans for this project have changed quite a few times. This started when I purchased the 54 F100 to build as a cruiser/driver. As I dug into the truck I kept finding more problems. The previous owner made a mess of the chassis. It was unsafe to use. So I picked up another F100 frame. I started to weld up up the replacement frame ( filling holes, boxing it, etc. ) .
Before I finished the frame I decided if I was going to spend all this time, effort and money building this truck then I didn't want to have to park it for 6-8 months out of the year. I wanted this to be my daily driver so I could really enjoy it. This means driving it thru the winter. So I thought it would be smart to make it 4wd.
Next came the decision on weather to convert the F100 frame to 4wd or mount the body on a newer chassis. I thought it would be easier to mount the body on a newer chassis.
After some searching I found out the fullsize Bronco's had the closest wheelbase to the F100's. The F100 had a 110" wheelbase. The fullsize Bronco had 104".
While searching for a Donor Bronco I decided it would be cool to build the 54 to be my tow vehicle. So I started looking for a F250 or heavier 4x4 chassis instead of the Bronco.
I found a 78 F250 4x4. I tore it down and did the mock up work on it. Then I decided I wanted something with some stronger diffs so I picked up a 84 F250 4x4 chassis and a 87 F350 4x4.
And just recently I bought a 91 Ford F-Superduty (basically a F450 ) 2wd with a 7.3L diesel, ZF 5spd and 14 foot flatbed. This truck is going to be my dedicated tow rig. So that means the 54 is going back to being my daily driver. So I'm going to be looking for a fullsize Bronco donor again to use for a chassis. Or Possibly take my 84 F250 4x4 chassis and cut it down from a 155" wheelbase to the stock 54 F100 shortbox's 110" wheelbase.
