Ford Fairmont

1978 Ford Fairmont Specs & Photos

The 1978 Ford Fairmont was the first car built on Ford's new Fox platform (unit construction, 105.5-inch wheelbase), shared with the Mercury Zephyr and replacing the Ford Maverick. It launched as a two-door sedan, a four-door sedan, and a five-door station wagon, with a Futura two-door coupe and its formal roofline added late in the model year. Engine choices were a standard 2.3L (140 cu in) Lima inline-four rated 88 hp net, an optional 3.3L (200 cu in) inline-six at 86 hp, and a 302 cu in (4.9L) Windsor V8 rated 139 hp. A four-speed manual was standard, with a three-speed SelectShift automatic optional.
