The 1979 Ford Fairmont was a carryover year on the Fox platform, keeping the two-door sedan, four-door sedan, station wagon, and Futura coupe body styles introduced in 1978. The engine lineup carried the standard 2.3L (140 cu in) inline-four at 88 hp net, the optional 3.3L (200 cu in) inline-six at 86 hp, and the 302 cu in (4.9L) Windsor V8 at 139 hp. The 1979 Ford Fairmont was the only year the 302 V8 could be ordered with a four-speed manual, and it was the last year the 302 was offered in the Fairmont before the smaller 255 cu in V8 replaced it for 1980.
