The 1989 Ford Probe launched the first-generation front-wheel-drive coupe on the Mazda GD platform, shared with the Mazda MX-6 and Mazda 626. It came in GL, LX, and GT trims with pop-up headlamps. The base engine was the Mazda F2 2.2-liter four rated at 110 horsepower and 130 lb-ft, and the GT used the turbocharged Mazda F2T 2.2 rated at 145 horsepower and 190 lb-ft. The 1989 Probe was built at the Flat Rock, Michigan plant alongside the Mazda MX-6.
