The 1988 Ford Taurus added the Essex 3.8 V6 as the upper engine, rated at 140 horsepower like the Vulcan 3.0 but with more torque, about 215 lb-ft. The 2.5 HSC inline-four and the Vulcan 3.0 V6 continued. The 1988 Taurus remained a front-wheel-drive sedan and wagon with the 0.32-drag aerodynamic body, and the Essex 3.8 used the four-speed AXOD automatic.
