The 1997 Ford Taurus lost its position as the best-selling car in the United States to the Toyota Camry, ending a streak that had run from 1992. The oval-theme lineup continued with the pushrod Vulcan 3.0 V6 at 145 horsepower, the Duratec 3.0 dual-overhead-cam V6 at 200 horsepower on the LX, and the SHO with its 3.4 Yamaha V8 at 235 horsepower paired to the AX4N automatic.
