The 1989 Ford Thunderbird launched the tenth-generation MN12 platform, a rear-wheel-drive coupe on a 113.0-inch wheelbase, nearly nine inches longer than the Fox car it replaced, and the first Thunderbird with four-wheel independent suspension. Base and LX models used a 3.8-liter V6 rated 140 horsepower, and no V8 was offered at launch. The new Super Coupe carried an Eaton M90 supercharged and intercooled 3.8-liter V6 rated 210 horsepower and 315 lb-ft with a standard five-speed manual, and it was named Motor Trend Car of the Year for 1989.
