The Jeep Wrangler TJ (1997-2006) was the second-generation Wrangler, built on a body-on-frame platform that replaced the previous YJ model's front and rear leaf springs with a link-and-coil suspension marketed as Quadra-Coil, using coil springs at all four corners with a solid front and rear axle. It returned to round headlamps after the square units of the 1987-1995 YJ. Powertrains ranged from a 2.5 liter inline-four (later a 2.4 liter four) to the 4.0 liter inline-six, all driving a part-time four-wheel-drive system. The Rubicon trim with front and rear locking differentials arrived for 2003, and the longer-wheelbase Unlimited (LJ) was offered for 2004-2006.
Other Jeep Wrangler generations
Platform and suspension
The Jeep Wrangler TJ (1997-2006) used a separate ladder frame with a solid front axle and solid rear axle. Its defining change from the YJ was the Quadra-Coil suspension: coil springs with trailing arms and a track bar at each end, replacing the leaf springs used on the 1987-1995 YJ. The coil-spring geometry increased wheel travel and articulation over the leaf-sprung predecessor. The TJ retained a folding windshield and removable doors and top.
Engine lineup
- 4.0 liter inline-six: the AMC-derived 242 cubic inch six, the primary performance engine across the run. It was rated at 181 horsepower for 1997-1999 and 190 horsepower from 2000 onward, following a 2000 revision that added a distributorless ignition and a redesigned cylinder head.
- 2.5 liter inline-four: the AMC-derived base engine at launch, rated at 120 horsepower, offered through the 2002 model year.
- 2.4 liter inline-four: the DOHC PowerTech four that replaced the 2.5 liter as the base engine for 2003, rated at 147 horsepower.
Drivetrain
The Wrangler TJ used part-time four-wheel drive with a two-speed transfer case. Standard models used the New Venture NV231 Command-Trac transfer case with a roughly 2.72:1 low range. The Rubicon added the NV241OR Rock-Trac transfer case with a 4:1 low range for lower crawl gearing. Rubicon models carried Dana 44 axles front and rear with air-actuated (pneumatic) Tru-Lok locking differentials, driven by a factory compressor rather than electric motors.
Transmissions
The Wrangler TJ was offered with manual and automatic transmissions. Manual options included a five-speed (Aisin AX-5 with the four-cylinder and NV3550 five-speed with the six, later a six-speed NSG370 for 2005-2006). The automatic was a three-speed unit (32RH/30RH) on earlier models, with a four-speed 42RLE automatic phased in on later TJs.
Year-by-year notable changes
- 1997: TJ launched with Quadra-Coil suspension, round headlamps, and the 2.5 liter four or 4.0 liter six.
- 2000: the 4.0 liter six gained a distributorless ignition and revised cylinder head, raising its rating from 181 to 190 horsepower.
- 2003: the 2.4 liter DOHC four replaced the 2.5 liter as the base engine, and the Rubicon trim debuted with Dana 44 axles, front and rear air-actuated lockers, and the 4:1 Rock-Trac transfer case.
- 2004: the long-wheelbase Wrangler Unlimited (LJ) was introduced, stretching the wheelbase roughly 10 inches for more rear-seat and cargo room.
- 2005-2006: the Unlimited Rubicon combined the long wheelbase with the Rubicon hardware; the NSG370 six-speed manual was offered.
Trims and variants
Core TJ trims included SE, Sport, Sahara, and the off-road-focused Rubicon (from 2003). The Unlimited (LJ, 2004-2006) used a longer wheelbase than the standard TJ, and an Unlimited Rubicon paired that body with locking differentials and the 4:1 transfer case. The standard TJ wheelbase was about 93 inches; the Unlimited stretched it to roughly 103 inches.
Asked all the time
What engines were available in the Jeep Wrangler TJ (1997-2006)?
The base engine was a 2.5 liter inline-four (120 horsepower) through 2002, replaced by a 2.4 liter DOHC inline-four (147 horsepower) for 2003. The optional and more powerful engine throughout was the 4.0 liter inline-six, rated at 181 horsepower for 1997-1999 and 190 horsepower from 2000 onward.
When did the Wrangler Rubicon first appear?
The Rubicon trim debuted for the 2003 model year. It added Dana 44 axles front and rear with air-actuated (pneumatic) Tru-Lok locking differentials and the Rock-Trac transfer case with a 4:1 low range, giving it lower crawl gearing than standard TJ models.
What is the difference between the TJ and the Unlimited (LJ)?
The standard Wrangler TJ used a wheelbase of about 93 inches. The Wrangler Unlimited (LJ), offered for 2004-2006, stretched the wheelbase to roughly 103 inches for more rear-seat and cargo space while keeping the same coil-spring suspension and engine choices.
What was the biggest change from the earlier YJ Wrangler?
The TJ replaced the YJ's leaf-spring suspension with the Quadra-Coil coil-spring link suspension at all four corners, improving wheel travel and articulation. The TJ also returned to round headlamps after the square headlamps used on the 1987-1995 YJ.
Which TJ years should a buyer seeking maximum off-road capability look for?
Model years 2003-2006 offer the Rubicon trim with front and rear air-actuated lockers and the 4:1 transfer case. Buyers wanting more interior room can look at the 2004-2006 Unlimited (LJ), and the 2005-2006 Unlimited Rubicon combines the long wheelbase with the locking-differential hardware.
