The tailgate was bent, and the handle didn't work right. But I was able to pry it back into near-perfect shape (along the access opening - not along the bottom) and screw the rib back on where the spot welds had ripped through. I also welded on some small tabs to the remote so the outside handle wouldn't bend out any more. Now it's much easier to open & close.
