1996 Ford Bronco Oil Change: Fumoto Drain Valve & Motorcraft FL-1A Filter Photos

The oil change was several months & hundred miles overdue. With the Fumoto F106, oil changes are now toolless. Some people worry that the valve could be broken off while off-roading. But as the pics show, it's recessed far above the engine crossmember & Y-pipe. The FL-1A was pre-filled with ~22oz of 10W40 using a blunt tool to open the anti-drainback valve so air could escape as the oil was poured in.

Oil filter installation instructions are commonly printed on the filter or the box, and commonly ignored.
1) Remove the old filter (and its O-ring from the block, if it sticks).
2) Add oil to the new filter, including filling it & wetting its O-ring.
3) Screw the new filter on.
4) After the O-ring contacts the block, continue an additional 3/4-1 turn (by hand only).
5) (Drain the crankcase &) add the remaining new oil to the crankcase. (This engine takes 6qts.)
6) Start the engine & check for leaks. (If none, allow the engine to reach operating temperature.)
7) Stop the engine, (remove the dipstick & wipe it, wait a few minutes for the oil to return to the pan,) and check the level using the dipstick.

Additionally, scratch the current odometer reading into the filter body.

This TSB indicates which oil weight to use, based on the expected weather before the next change:

This document is a six-photo collage recording an engine oil change on a Ford Bronco. The instrument cluster photo shows an odometer reading of 185,754 miles alongside a Quaker State service-due sticker from Coops Fastlube & Tire of Cushing, OK, specifying QS 10W-30 oil and a next service due at 02/29/20 or 185,000 miles. Underbody photos show the oil pan fitted with a quick-drain (Fumoto-style) valve, annotated "tool opens drainback valve," plus views of the exhaust crossover and frame area with a callout arrow. The right-side photos, labeled "Step 2," show a new Motorcraft FL-1A oil filter (part D9AZ-6731-A) being pre-filled with fresh oil from a blue quart bottle, with annotations noting approximately 22 oz of oil in the FL-1A filter, about 10 oz left in the quart, and the O-ring oiled before installation. An inset reproduces Motorcraft's seven-step pictogram "Oil Filter Installation Instructions." A reader learns the filter part number used, the pre-fill technique and quantities, that the truck uses a drainback/quick-drain valve opened by a tool, and the recorded mileage and oil grade for this service interval.
