Vac- uum can be obtained by attaching the vacuum probe directly to the vacuum motor while running the en gine. If the motor has a tendency to operate but cannot pull the pawl free of the ange, disconnect the motor from the locking pawl cable when checking with a pull scale. Attach a pull scale to the vacuum motor and apply a minimum of 14 inches of vacuum. If the motor registers 1618 pounds of pull, it is sat isfactory. The scale reading will be proportionately higher than the amount of vacuum applied. Then, check locking pawl cable for binding or other damage. Vacuum Release Valve Test Before testing the mechanical operation of the vacuum release valve, check for vacuum to the re- lease valve. If no vacuum is found with the engine running, check out the vacuum system. However, if vacuum is found at the release valve, disconnect the wiring harness from the vacuum release valve sole noid. Disconnect the wiring harness from the vacuum release valve solenoid. Connect jumper wire lead to the spade terminal of the vacuum release valve (Fig. 9). If the vacuum release valve solenoid clicks or movement is detected by feeling the magnetic cylin der, the mechanical operation of the valve is satis factory. 12 VOLT SOURCE Fig. 9Vacuum Release Valve Test STARTER SAFETY SWITCH TEST Disconnect the wires from the safety switch, which is inside the vacuum motor and connect a self powered test light to the switch. The test light should glow with the steering wheel in the drive position or the starter safety switch is defective. Place the steering wheel in the tiltaway position. If the engine will not start and there is no vacuum reserve, pull downward on locking pawl cable man- ually to release the wheel. The test light should not glow.
