The 1984 Nissan 300ZX launched the Z31 generation, replacing the 280ZX (S130) and introducing Nissan's new VG-series V6. Engine choices were the naturally aspirated VG30E 3.0L SOHC V6 rated at 160 net horsepower and the turbocharged VG30ET rated at 200 net horsepower, driving through a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic. It was sold as a two-seat hatchback and a longer-wheelbase 2+2. For the model's debut year Nissan offered a 50th Anniversary Edition turbo marking the company's fiftieth year, fitted with digital instrumentation and unique two-tone paint.
