The 1996 Toyota 4Runner launched the third generation on a new chassis with coil springs at all four corners and rack-and-pinion steering. Engine choices were the 150 hp 2.7L 3RZ-FE four or the 183 hp 3.4L 5VZ-FE V6. A factory electric locking rear differential was on the option sheet, which is why locker-equipped third-gen trucks are the ones crawlers hunt for.
