The 1997 Toyota 4Runner carried the third generation into its second year with the 150 hp 2.7L 3RZ-FE four or the 183 hp 3.4L 5VZ-FE V6, both available with a five-speed manual. The factory electric locking rear differential remained optional on 4x4 models. TRD later offered a bolt-on supercharger for the 5VZ-FE, a factory-backed upgrade that still turns up in build threads.
