The 2003 Toyota 4Runner opened the fourth generation on a new chassis shared with the Lexus GX 470, with a 245 hp 4.0L 1GR-FE V6 standard and a 235 hp 4.7L 2UZ-FE V8 optional. Every 2003 model used an automatic transmission, and V8 4x4s ran full-time four-wheel drive with a Torsen center differential. Coil springs at all four corners and available Downhill Assist Control rounded out the off-road hardware.
