2025-2026 Toyota 4RunnerSixth-Gen 4Runner

2025–2026

The sixth-generation Toyota 4Runner (2025-2026) is an all-new midsize SUV built on Toyota's TNGA-F body-on-frame platform, the same architecture used by the Tacoma, Tundra, Sequoia, and Land Cruiser. It drops the previous generation's 4.0 liter V6 for a turbocharged 2.4 liter i-FORCE inline-four rated at 278 horsepower, with an available i-FORCE MAX hybrid version of that engine producing 326 horsepower. All versions pair the engine with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Platform

The sixth-generation 4Runner (2025-2026) moves to Toyota's TNGA-F body-on-frame platform, shared with the fourth-generation Tacoma, the Tundra, the Sequoia, and the current Land Cruiser. This replaces the fifth-generation 4Runner's older frame, which had been in production since the 2010 model year.

Engine lineup

The sixth-generation 4Runner drops the previous 4.0 liter V6 for a turbocharged 2.4 liter inline-four.

  • i-FORCE 2.4 liter turbocharged inline-four: 278 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque. This is the standard engine.
  • i-FORCE MAX 2.4 liter turbocharged inline-four hybrid: the same turbo four combined with an electric motor integrated into the transmission, for a combined 326 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque (the Trailhunter grade is rated at 323 horsepower). This is the available hybrid powertrain.

Transmission and drivetrain

Both the i-FORCE and i-FORCE MAX powertrains use an eight-speed automatic transmission. The 4Runner is offered with rear-wheel drive on lower grades and with four-wheel drive, including part-time 4WD with a two-speed transfer case on off-road-focused grades and a full-time 4WD system with a locking center differential available on the Limited and standard on the Platinum. An electronically locking rear differential is standard on the TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro, and Trailhunter grades.

Trims and variants

The sixth-generation 4Runner is offered in nine grades. The standard i-FORCE turbo four is fitted to the more road-oriented grades, while the i-FORCE MAX hybrid is standard on the top grades and optional on several off-road and luxury grades.

  • SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Sport Premium: come with the i-FORCE turbo four; the i-FORCE MAX hybrid is not offered on these grades.
  • TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, Limited: come standard with the i-FORCE turbo four, with the i-FORCE MAX hybrid available as an option.
  • Platinum: the luxury grade, fitted with the i-FORCE MAX hybrid as standard.
  • TRD Pro: the high-clearance off-road grade, fitted with the i-FORCE MAX hybrid as standard.
  • Trailhunter: the overland-oriented grade, also fitted with the i-FORCE MAX hybrid as standard.

Year-by-year changes

  • 2025: launch year for the sixth generation, introducing the TNGA-F platform, the i-FORCE and i-FORCE MAX turbocharged 2.4 liter engines, and the eight-speed automatic.
  • 2026: the sixth generation continues with the same core powertrains and eight-speed transmission, with most grades carrying over unchanged.
