The 1983 Volkswagen Scirocco was a carryover year of the second-generation Scirocco (Typ 53B), the Karmann-built three-door hatchback coupe on Volkswagen's front-wheel-drive A1 platform. US 1983 cars retained the 1.7-liter (1715 cc) SOHC 8-valve inline-four rated at 74 hp (SAE net) with a standard 5-speed manual, unchanged from 1982; the larger 1.8-liter engine did not reach US Sciroccos until 1984. The body remained the restyled second-generation 2+2 coupe introduced for 1982.
