The 1997 Chevrolet C/K 1500 added a passenger-side airbag with a cutoff switch, joining the driver airbag fitted since 1995. The Vortec engines introduced for 1996 continued: a 4.3-liter V6 at 200 horsepower, a 5.0-liter V8 at 220, and a 5.7-liter V8 at 255. A passenger-side third door remained available on extended cabs, and Silverado stayed the top trim two years ahead of the changeover that made it a model name.
