The 1996 Ford Taurus opened the third generation with a full redesign built on an oval styling theme. The base engine was the pushrod Vulcan 3.0 V6 rated at 145 horsepower, joined by the new dual-overhead-cam Duratec 3.0 V6 rated at 200 horsepower on the LX, both with a four-speed automatic. The SHO switched to a 3.4 Yamaha V8 rated at 235 horsepower with the AX4N automatic. The Taurus remained the best-selling car in the United States for 1996.
