The 1987 Ford Thunderbird received a major mid-cycle aerodynamic facelift with flush headlamps and smoother front and rear ends, and it was named Motor Trend Car of the Year. The Turbo Coupe was upgraded to an intercooled 2.3L turbocharged four-cylinder producing 190 SAE net horsepower with the five-speed manual (150 hp with the automatic), plus standard four-wheel disc brakes and automatic ride control. The 232 cubic inch (3.8L) V6 remained standard and the 302 cubic inch (5.0L) V8 optional.
