The 1988 Ford Thunderbird closed out the ninth-generation Aero Bird, the aerodynamic coupe built on Ford's Fox platform since 1983. The standard 3.8-liter Essex V6 gained multiport fuel injection this year, raising output from 120 to 140 horsepower, while the Sport model carried the 155-horsepower 5.0-liter V8. The Turbo Coupe returned for its final year with an intercooled 2.3-liter turbocharged four rated 190 horsepower with the five-speed manual and 150 horsepower with the automatic, backed by four-wheel disc brakes with ABS and automatic ride control.
