Installation instructions for a Ford Motorsport F-Series Mass Air system, detailing kit applications and procedures.
MOTORSPORT IS_M_9000_T51. ' _ __ F-SERIES MASS AIR 1/21/93 51... 545.5%? INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS PAGE 1 OF 9 NO PART OF THIS DOCUMENT MAY I! PRODUCED WITHOUT PRIOR AGREEMENT AND WRITTEN PERMISSION OF FORD MOTOR COMPANY SPECIAL VEHICLE OPERATIONS. * also covers kits PN M~9000-TSO. T52 8. T53 INTRODUCTION: This product is the first of it's kind to be oered by FORD SPECIAL VEHICLE OPERATIONS (5V0). to improve the performance potential of your F-series V3 truck. it is difficult to use the production EEC-lV system in a high perfor- mance application. Because the production EEC-iv system calculates how much air the engine is using. and delivers the correct amount of fuel based on this calculation.VVhen an engine is modied to ow more air. this calculation is no longer valid. and the EEC-IV processor must be re-calibrated. Re-calibration is not something that can be done at home. which led Ford SVO to assemble this package as a solution to the problem. The Motorsport EEC-iv processor doesnt caICulate how much air your engine is using. it measures it directly with a Mass Air Flow Sensor. If the engine is modified to ow more air. the EEC-JV can see the difference and deliver appropiate spark timing along with more fuel. when it is needed. OVERVIEW: Computer electronic engine controls and fuel injection make it difcult to improve engine performance. More sophisticated approaches are required. Remembering that engines are basically air pumps. the basic problem for an EEC-JV computer is to determine airow for any given throttle angleJoad and engine RPM, so it can signal appropriate fuel flow to mix with the air. The F-series trucks use 3 SPEED DENSITY system - in which airow ls inferred from several sensors. including measurements of engine speed. manifold pressure and air charge temperature. along with an approximation of the engine's pumping characteristics. The Motorsport kit uitilizes a MASS AIR system in which airow is measured directly with an air meter. A hot wire" sensing element in the air intake provides an output voltage reading that is proportional to the mass ofair owing into the engine. The mass air system reduces the ulculations required to control fuel flow and ignition spark advance. while providing the versatility required for performance modications aliectfng airow and manifold vacuum. it reacts faster and more accurately to changes in airow. im- proves idle quality and overall vehicle performance. lNSTALLATION: The installation of this kit can be done with a minimum of mechanical experience but it is very important to closely follow the instructions. Read each step of the instructions before beginning the installation and ifyou do not under- stand it. go back and read it again. If you do not feel comfortable partially disassembling a vehicle. take this kit to an experienced mechanic to be installed. This kit can be installed in approximately 4 hours by carefully foilowing the instructions. Read each step first to familiarize yourself with the procedure and the parts involved.
