Rear gears are much less work, although there is additional precision related to it. Maybe its easier for me because I've done these so many times.

Start by draining the rear differential, leaving one or two bolts in the top of the cover so that oil doesn't get splashed all over the place. I'd rather have a controlled mess than just a mess.
