Once the cover is off, this is what you're left with if you have a limited slip differential. An open carrier is not much different. Brake parts cleaner goes a long way in cleaning up the inside of the rear housing and gearset. Keep in mind that the axles contain some of the gear oil, and they will continue to seep this oil into the housing for some time.
