I tried several different ways of spacing the tone ring evenly around the spool, ultimately I settled on taking 4 left over 30/1000" shims and spacing the ring evenly with those. I was concerned about the weld heat warping it or drawing the ring to one side, so I clamped it in place with 4 clamps.
